Manufactured in precision CNC bent Swedish SSAB Docol R8 tubes and designed in a fresh unique style, the NCCR Shotgun frame originally was in 2022 engineered for HD Sportster and Buell XB engines. For the Snoopii Custom project the geometry and the rear section got a complete re-design and the new NCCR Plunger Suspension was developed. The engine/gearbox space was extended, so the chassis can take most drivetrain combinations and as the frames are made individually, the drivetrain adaption fee is included (CAD data or drivetrain need to be supplied). That way any V-Twin, Single, In-line 2,3,4,6 cylinder or Boxer engine can be integrated.
The NCCR Plunger Rear Suspension:
Developed more than 100 years ago and discontinued for more than 50 years, the Plunger rear suspension was always a questionable, shaky construction. The reason is, that a per side single shock construction with a direct attached axle (without swingarm) either needs a lot of play or generates too much friction. Because of that the swing arm rear end overtook the wheel guidance from the late 1960´s on and the shocks could supply what they can do best – suspend and dampen the wheel movement. But after all these years, is there still a demand and is there a solution to do something better where a worldwide industry failed?
NCCR developed this new plunger out of 2 reasons, first it’s unfinished business –an engineering challenge. Second, a functioning plunger suspension offers additional design options and can be attached to any Hardtail frame, just as back in the days aftermarket plunger rear ends were available to weld on Triumph or Harley frames.
The plan is, after road testing the system in the upcoming season with the NCCR Shotgun Plunger Frame, to offer also weld-on packages for custom bike builders to complete own frames or to modify existing chassis. And yes, NCCR also have a solution for the second reason why the Plunger died out, the change in the chain tension, as the rear wheel goes straight up and down and not follows a circular path around the swing arm pivot point.
So why does the NCCR Plunger work better and what does it have to offer?
NCCR use per side a dual construction similar to a front fork, that way it combines lowest friction with best wheel guidance. The 2 chambers allow the integration of extra functions, one is the ability to lock the rear end to use it as a hardtail or adjust the rear ride height. The system is a combination of hydraulic, spring and air pressure chamber for easy setting and offers in the actual development stage a suspension travel way of 65mm.
The Plunger unit can be height adjusted in the clamps and a special designed construction is integrated to clamp the axle. On the rear, a 3-in-1 tail-, brake light and indicator unit is integrated. Optional, a version with integrated chain tensioners will be available.
